I'm going to post my Sky Watch contribution a little early this week because last night I got a call from my sister-in-law - Helen - about a phenomenon that was occurring in the sky and that she thought we might be interested in seeing it.
According to Astrovisuals
"In the last week in November and the first week of December 2008, the two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, will be close together in the evening sky, forming a spectacular double. The two are closest together on Monday December 1st, with Venus lying about 2 degrees to the South (left) of Jupiter. On the same night the Crescent Moon will appear just beneath them, forming a “Smiley Face”.
Upper diagram shows graphic representation of the event; lower diagram shows a more accurate representation of arrangement. Viewers in WA will see a better view, with the moon closer to the planets, while in South Africa the Moon will move between Venus and Jupiter."

So, as you can imagine, we raced outside to find the moon and then kept a close watch on the sky as darkness began to fall and the stars became visible. We had had quite a bit of cloud about when Helen had called BUT as the night went on, the cloud contracted to the east and the westerly skies were clear.
What a spectacular view we got! Here's some of my favourite pics that I managed to capture - right from when the Moon, Venus and Jupiter first became visible and then once it was completely dark!

Pretty cool huh? I've never seen anything like it before and as you can imagine, the boys - who love learning about outer space and everything to do with the planets - thought it was just awesome! They didn't stay up to see it once the sky had gone pitch black but none-the-less they are both keen to take a photo to school today and to see how many of their friends saw it too!
Until next time,
