I heard on the news that the price of some Vegetables & Fruits is going to going to sky rocket as the full effect of the QLD & Victorian flooding takes effect - one of those to do so will be Tomatoes!
Well - despite the prices already starting to climb, I have to confess that I haven't had to buy Tomatoes now for nearly 2 weeks . . . here's why!
Yes, that's two of our very own homegrown Tomatoes!
I have to confess that I'm quite chuffed with them because up until this year I've NEVER had any success in growing Tomatoes in our garden - and I think I've tried EVERY YEAR for the past 10+ years!
Whether it's been the Garden Overhaul and Re-design last year OR the Goat Poo OR the Sugar Cane Mulch OR the more regular Watering & Feeding OR a combination of everything - I don't really care - I'm just loving the amount of produce we are getting!
Every day we're picking 2 - 4 kgs of Tomatoes! Here's what my sink/bench looks like in the kitchen at the moment!
Mind you - this is only those that aren't quite ripe yet - we pick them with a hint of colour on them and then after a day or two of sitting here, they turn a lovely deep red colour, like those in the first photo!
I've probably got 2kgs in the fridge ready to eat fresh in salads & sandwiches AND there's another 2kgs in there ready for Tomato Sauce making tomorrow AND I've just made a batch of Tomato Sauce using another 2kgs as well! I've got enough 250ml bottles here to make 15 bottles of Tomato Sauce, after that, I'll simply be freezing it to use as I would tinned tomato . . . I seem to always be buying tinned tomato, so it will be nice to have our very own homegrown tomato in the freezer to use instead!
Not that I have a photo to share, but we also picked a 4kg Cabbage from the garden earlier today so that I could use half of it to make a Coleslaw for a BBQ we were going to. Thanks Mel & family for a wonderful evening . . . it was great to catch-up and it would seem the kids all had a fantastic time too!
